Fire Mountain WKND Program

Scouts First - Adventure Always!

What is the Fire Mountain WKND?

The Fire Mountain WKND program model is a layered system that allows for flexibility in the use of the 600+ acres of camp. It also offers flexibility in offerings to the unit, be that unit a Cub Pack, Scout Troop, Venturing Crew, or district/council program.

1)      WKND Core program: the basic foundation that every weekend will be built on. The Core will be rigid in its offerings to give solid connection points for other parts of the WKND schedule and will offer dependable, consistent program so that EVERY time a Scout sets foot at camp it feels like a Fire Mountain experience. While the Core is built for those reserving campsites and staying the weekend, ALL individuals on site would be able to participate in key points in the schedule.

2)      WKND Elective programs: these are the things that people would “get up and go” to camp for, which may or may mean being at camp for the entire weekend. The Elective groups are: Service Saturday, Range Day, COPE/Climbing Day, and FM Institute. Scheduled on the first, second, third, and fourth Saturday respectively (5th weekends would not have a planned Elective program). While Scouts and Scouters staying on site would be the primary target attendance for Elective programs, individuals may register for these programs and arrive on site for the day/a few hours to partake.

3)      WKND Add On programs: named thus because they are separate budgets and programs from the WKND Fire Mountain program calendar. Add On programs would include trainings, such as IOLS/BALOO or even Wood Badge, as well as other major programs such as a District Camporee. Outside user groups like the Girl Scouts or internal council operations such as a Board Off-site would also be considered an Add On program.

The Core is consistent and the same EVERY weekend, while the Elective and Add On programs will vary, with some on a schedule and others being one-off calendar events. Together these will form the Fire Mountain WKND.

The Core is an outline of fixed operational and program elements thoughtfully built and consistent weekend to weekend.

The Fire Mountain WKND Electives

Service Saturday – First Saturday work parties at camp open to ALL. Units in camp may choose to participate. Units choosing to participate will be helping to maintain their camp while learning important skills. Service Saturday will be organized by the Camp Maintenance Chair and Ranger and supported by on-site staff as well as the Order of the Arrow Vice Chief of Cheerful Service. Projects will be posted in advance for the weekend for volunteers to bring tools etc. and for staff to promote the projects to units in camp.

Range Days – The Council Range and Target Committee will determine well in advance which ranges will be open and how many sign-ups each session can accept. The objective of these range days is NOT to offer the merit badge, but more of an “open” troop/patrol shoot program. The Committee will balance weekends between Scouts BSA level ranges and Cub Scout age-appropriate ranges with input from the VP of Outdoor Program.

Ropes Days – The Council COPE and Climbing Committee will determine if it is COPE or the Climbing Tower (or both) that they are opening for the day and how registration should be taken (it may be individual or by den/patrol). The Committee will balance weekends between Scouts BSA level program and Cub Scout age-appropriate areas with input from the VP of Outdoor Program.

Fire Mountain Institute – The Institute is a weekend dedicated to training. This does NOT necessarily imply classroom. The goal is for classes to be based on four sessions with a course catalog made up of a core selection of Cub and Scouts BSA basic skills and leadership classes.
